Open AI have released an integrated check out feature sot hat Chat GPT users can directly purchase from AI responses.

Whilst we do not know exactly what this means for brands when it comes to the user's purchase journeys, its a key indication of the direction we could be heading in when it comes to AI capabilities.

Between December 2024 and February 2025, ChatGPT saw a 33% increase in its user base from 300 million to 400 million, (DemandSage) indicating sustained popularity and consistent growth over the preceding months. And according to SparkToro, there are now more than 37.5 million searches taking place every day. Whilst this is still far below the number of Google searches, the speed at which this number is growing cannot be ignored.

Searches range hugely from users wanting personalised recipes and work out plans to examples like the below; asking for purchasing advice.

Whilst users cannot directly complete the checkout process within ChatGPT at present, we can assume that it will not be long before platforms like Shopify begin looking for API solutions to integrate checkout and payment processes.

What does this mean for marketers?

First and foremost, marketers need to be paying close attention to the information included in their product description pages. Are you tailoring your descriptions and product features to cater to common user queries? Go beyond just listing features and really look into search queries within your industry or product category.

Think less like a marketer and more like a retailer or merchandiser.

Users might not search for "black going out dress" but rather "best type of dress to wear to on a first date - under $300". So be mindful about those more niche long tail keywords. Hopefully this is something that you already have in place from a well thought out SEO strategy but if not, the time to start doing some keyword and search term research is now.
